Medals for Le Clos in Dubai
Chad le Clos showed off his winning form with three medals, while Cameron van der Burgh scooped gold and Michael Meyer bronze during the first day of the FINA Swimming World Cup’s final leg in Dubai.
It was gold for Le Clos in the 50m butterfly in 23.31, ahead of USA’s Giles Smith in 23.67 and Serbia’s Ivan Lendjer in 23.74. Johannes du Rand ended in 8th place with a time of 24.37.
In the 100m freestyle, the Durbanite was happy with his second place finish in 48.38 as the gold went to France’s Jeremy Stravius in 48.34 and the bronze to Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanovic in 48.86. Douglas Erasmus and Caydon Muller finished tied in 7th place when they both clocked 49.78.
Le Clos’ third medal was a silver in the 200m butterfly in 1:56.03 with the gold going to Denmark’s Viktor Bromer in 1:55.98 and the bronze to Singapore’s Zheng Quah in 1:56.26.
Olympian Van der Burgh took a step closer to the World Cup title with a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke, touching the wall ahead of the pack with a time of 26.77, while teammate Giulio Zorzi won the bronze in 27.45 and Great Britain’s Adam Peaty the silver in 27.16.
Meyer finished the evening on a high note with a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley in 4:18.58, while Ayrton Sweeney, Joshua Dannhouser and Jordan le Clos were 5th, 6th and 7th in 4:31.89, 4:33.40 and 4:36.28 respectively.
In other results, Kaylene Corbett was 8th in the 100m breaststroke final with a time of 1:10.20, while Sweeney came 7th in the 200m breaststroke in 2:15.09.
The 2015 FINA Swimming World Cup concludes tomorrow.
