Momentum Proteas opening batter Lizelle Lee has been named
as the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2021 following a stellar year
for the women’s national team.
Lee, who finished 2021 as the highest run scorer in women’s 50 over cricket, raked up 632 runs in eleven matches which included a century and five half-centuries at an average of 90.
Her contribution to the Momentum Proteas’ high-profile 4-1 series win over India in India was immense with 288 runs in the series with one century and two fifties in the five match series.
Following on from the India series she was also the highest run scorer in the Momentum Proteas’ series against the West Indies which solidified her purple patch of form in 2021.
Receiving the recognition was humbling but also a surprise for the hard-hitting opening batter.
“I am very privileged and honoured to have been awarded the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year. I honestly didn’t expect this. It is a privilege just to be nominated, anyone could have won this award. It is truly an honour," she said to the ICC.
“There are so many that I would like to give credit to not just on the field but off the field too. Firstly, I would like to thank my family which has been my number one support system, my parents and my wife, our coaching staff, and teammates, without whom none of this would have been possible.”
Pakistan captain Babar Azam was named as the ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year.
