England’s Robinson suspended over racist Tweets
Updated | By Nick Tatham
England seamer Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all
international cricket until an investigation into racist tweets he sent in 2012
and 2013 has been concluded.
Robinson made his test debut in the first test against New Zealand
that concluded at Lords yesterday and took an impressive seven for 101 across
the match and scored 42 runs with the bat.
The tweets became the centre of attention following the opening day of the test and the 27 year-old made a public apology following the day’s play will play no further part in the series against the Black Caps – the second test starts on Thursday.
Robinson's tweets included suggesting Muslim people are connected to terrorism as well as derogatory comments about Asian people.
"England and Sussex bowler Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all international cricket pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation following historic tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013," the statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board said via AFP.
"He will not be available for selection for the second Test against New Zealand starting at Edgbaston on Thursday 10 June.
"Robinson will leave the England camp immediately and return to his county.”
England captain Joe Root hopes that despite the severity of the situation it can be another important learning curve for cricketers going forward.
"We can look back about how this could have been handled better, but the fact is it shouldn't have happened,” Root said.
"And if we continue to keep trying to better the game right now, then in years to come this shouldn't be an issue.
"We've got to move forward from this, learn from this and do everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen again."
With the first test match ending in a draw England and New Zealand will face off in the second and final test this week.
Spinner Dom Bess has been added to the England squad for the final match of the series.
