Dolphins return to winning ways at Kingsmead
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins returned to winning ways with a solid team performance earning them a 31-run home victory over the Dafabet Warriors in a CSA One Day Cup at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Friday.
Half centuries and a 107-run fourth-wicket stand from Ruan De Swardt (54 runs) and Jason Smith (51), combined with three-wicket hauls from Prenelan Subrayen (3/36) and Daryn Dupavillion (3/52), ensured the Hollywoodbets Dolphins were able to snuff out the Warriors challenge and beat the threatening skies to claim their second victory in the competition.
The Dolphins won the toss and opted to bat and the decision proved correct as Jon Jon Smuts (39) and Tshepang Dithole (46) laid a solid platform before Smuts was caught by Glenton Stuurman off Tristan Stubbs and the momentum was halted. And then, when Marques Ackerman and Dithole went in the space of nine balls just before the halfway stage of the innings, and with less than 100 on the board, it looked like the Warriors might take control.
But Smith and De Swardt took their time to rebuild, and when Smith was sent back to the changerooms with just over six overs remaining, the pair had put the Dolphins in a position to at least post a defendable target.
The final few overs saw a flurry of runs and wickets, but the home side were able to take their total to 232 and give their bowlers a chance, despite Akhona Mnyaka claiming four for 44 from his nine overs.
Dupavillion gave the Dolphins the best possible start and set the tone when he trapped Jordan Hermann in front in the first over with the ball. From then on the bowling unit collected regular wickets as the Warriors failed to build any meaningful partnerships.
Matthew Breetzke (67) did his best to hold up one end for the Warriors, but Subrayen's spin cleared out the middle order and once Breetzke was caught and bowled by Dupavillion, it was clear the Dolphins were cruising inexorably toward victory.
