Broomhead out for amateur glory at the SA Open
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Durban’s up and coming golfing star Jono Broomhead will tee it up in his first SA Open this week at Blair Atholl in Johannesburg hoping to be crowned the leading amateur, and with that lift the coveted Freddie Tait Cup.
Durban Country Club’s Broomhead is on the cusp of turning professional but will take on the second oldest national open in the world with an eye on joining the likes of Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman and Branden Grace in carving his name in history.
“Obviously all us amateurs are good mates because we have a good bond but you want to play better than anyone else in the end,” Broomhead said on the eve of the national open.
“There is a lot more to it than just winning the trophy. I will have to play really well and manage all the pressure and expectation that comes with such a high-profile tournament.
“Winning the Freddie Tait Cup will be huge in giving me confidence going forward into next year.”

At over 7500 metres Blair Atholl is the third longest golf course in the world which will add an entirely new element to the tournament. For Broomhead it’s going to be important to manage his body through the week.
“The course is demanding on your feet because you walk a lot so it’s crucial that you manage the way you prepare.
“You don’t want to spend the whole day out there and be finished by the time you tee off on Thursday so it’s been important that I haven’t overdone it.”
The 22-year-old is the current SA Strokeplay champion and will fancy his chances going into this week to finish as the top placed amateur.
Broomhead will tee off on Thursday afternoon at 1pm with former Freddie Tait winner Casey Jarvis and Norway’s Kristian Krogh Johannessen.
