Young boxer Simiso Buthelezi has passed away due to brain
injuries he sustained during a bout over the past weekend.
Buthelezi was involved in a boxing tournament hosted by Starline Boxing Promotions in Greyville on Sunday where he collapsed in the last round of the bout before he was taken to hospital.
In a statement, Boxing South Africa said that his conditions deteriorated in hospital before he passed away.
"It is with great sadness for Boxing South Africa and the Buthelezi family to announce the passing away of Mr Simiso Buthelezi, who passed away last night on 7 June in hospital in Durban," the statement said.
"Towards the end of his bout, Mr Buthelezi collapsed and was taken to hospital and it was discovered that he suffered a brain injury which resulted in internal bleeding. At the hospital, Mr Buthelezi was given the best care possible but he succumbed to the injury."
Buthelezi went viral on social media following the bout when he was seen shadow boxing when his opponent was behind him. The family have requested space to mourn and all funeral arrangements will be made in due course.
Despite the best care possible being given to Buthelezi, Boxing South Africa have stated that they will be conducting an independent medical review.
