All-round Kapp helps Momentum Proteas past England
Updated | By Nick Tatham
A five wicket haul and a vital contribution with the bat
from Marizanne Kapp helped the Momentum Proteas to a three wicket win over
defending champions England at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in Tauranga on
Monday.
Kapp took her first career five wicket haul when she finished with figures of 5/45 to help the Proteas restrict England to 235 for nine in their 50 overs while Masabata Klaas chipped in with figures of 2/23.
The 236 to win was their highest chase of the World Cup so far and the win sees them climb to second on the table and become the second unbeaten side in the competition after Australia.
There was a nervy moment for the Proteas after Kapp was dismissed for 32, however Trisha Chetty and Shabnim Ismail got the job done, however Kapp wasn’t satisfied because she wasn’t there at the end to win the game.
“Honestly I was pretty annoyed with myself because I should have finished that game,” Kapp said. “I put a lot of pressure on the two batters at the end but fortunately for us they are very experienced players with over 100 internationals between them and I backed them to get us over the line.”
With over 120 international 50 over matches under her belt Kapp was relived that she could finally get that first five wicket haul.
“It finally came around for me and it finally came around
but for it to come in a big game like this is great and I am just happy that I
could stand up and contribute in a game like this,” she added.
“Being with this team and being able to represent my country in so many games I
think I have reached the point in my career where I know what I am capable of.
“If I back myself and know what I can achieve then I usually do well.”
Laura Wolvaardt starred with the bat for the Momentum Proteas scoring a second consecutive half century when she made 77 while captain Sune Luus contributed again with 36.
The Momentum Proteas will take on hosts New Zealand in another tough clash on Thursday.
