Umgeni Water warns KZN residents of 'Day Zero'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Umgeni Water says severe water restrictions will need to implemented over the next two years if KZN's to avoid its own day zero.

That's if consumers continue to ignore calls to use water sparingly.
The utility's Steve Gilham says of the 15% water restrictions put in place across the Umgeni system, only 5% is being saved by consumers.
He says KZN was able to avoid its own day zero two years ago by planning ahead.

Capacity at the Albert Falls and Inanda Dams - are of particular concern. Gilham says the Umgeni system would be at 70% if all municipalities were able to achieve the 15% reduction in water use.
"All the municipalities together are saving 5%. We need to be at 15%. A lot of it is related to two aspects. One - people are seeing the rain falling outside - saying, it's raining outside therefore we are out of the woods. We are fine now and we can start using," he says.
