Prem Balram of Reaction Unit South Africa says two others were arrested on the scene.

"Reaction officers were posted in the area. We used a helicopter in the morning and we have done a fly over in the entire Oaklands and surrounding Redcliff areas."

The group has been linked to an alleged syndicate operation and had been reported to authorities midway through a robbery in the Oaklands area by a resident.

It's believed the group had been trying to steal a vehicle when they were interrupted.

They then got into their getaway car and sped off.

Officers responded to the call out with a high-speed chase ensuing until the suspects were cornered at the Oaklands Village complex.

Balram says a shootout with members and reaction officers unfolded before several items were recovered.

"Immediately on scene, they were identified as computer boxes and keys belonging to a Toyota Corolla. However, the vehicle we suspect was stolen was an old shape Mitsubishi bakkie that would probably not require a computer box. This is a common practice for car thieves and hijackers to carry boxes with matching keys that they normally buy from a scrap yard. It makes it easier to override it," he says.
