Kaunda: Durban beaches will be open by 1 December

Kaunda briefed the media on Wednesday on some of the work that's been done to repair infrastructure after April's disastrous floods. 

The quality of the water at Durban's beaches has been in the spotlight in recent months, with most of them closed for swimming, surfing and other activities. 

"We are working with limited resources, which are inadequate to cover each and every space where damage has occurred in the city," says Kaunda.

"But we have success stories. Part of those stories is Tongaat Water Treat Plant which was washed away - it is up and running as we speak. 

"We have opened a number of beaches in the city and we only remain with four which we are working tirelessly. Come 1 December, all our beaches will be up and running."

Kaunda was speaking in Verulam at the launch of a partnership with insurer, Santam. 

Teams will work together to try to avoid a repeat of the devastation caused by floods, through the use of scientific technology. 

The company also handed over R4 million worth of firefighting equipment to the municipality.
