Fedhasa: KZN needs to clean up its image

The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (Fedhasa) says with leisure travel to and from Gauteng allowed again, businesses in KwaZulu-Natal now face the difficult task of cleaning up the province's image tainted by the recent unrest.

"Even though the restrictions are going to help, but you have to understand since the violence of last week that majority or provinces occupancy figures and hotels and resorts has gone down," the association's east coast head Brett Tungay says. 


President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday that inter-provincial travel to and from Gauteng, for leisure, will resume under lockdown level 3. 


Tungay has described the relaxation of the rule as God sent relief for the tourism industry in KZN.

He says many businesses were crippled by the restrictions as 60% of our domestic tourists come from Gauteng. 


"We have seen now this week a little bit of a pickup. Some places reporting 15 to 20% occupancy, which of course, is absolutely dismal. How long it's going to take for the tourist numbers to revert to historical levels we don't know as the industry as yet."
