Disaster teams deployed after tragedy strikes in Umzinyathi

Disaster management teams are on the ground in Umzinyathi following severe thunderstorms that have resulted in the death of three boys and destruction of homes.
Three boys drowned while taking refuge in a bridge pipe from the heavy rain on Saturday night that led to flash floods in Msinga while two other children managed to get to safety.
The department's Lennox Mabaso says disaster management teams have been dispatched to the district.

"We understand that five boys were on their way home and attempted to take shelter in one of the parts that are normally used during road construction. As they were taking shelter we understand that due to flooding - the water cam gushing down. When they attempted to run away, three of them drowned," he said.
Local government officials say assessments are being conducted to determine the extent of damages.

Meanwhile, KZN MEC for Cogta, Nomusa Dube-Ncube has sent condolences to the families of the children.
Residents of the district are being urged to be exercise caution during thunderstorms.
