Thirteen people died at the scene when a taxi and two other vehicles collided on the R33. A 14th person has died in hospital.

"Fourteen people have now been confirmed as deceased from this terrible crash. Four people have survived the crash at this stage. They were treated by KZN EMS paramedics at the scene," KZN Emergency Medical Services' Robert Mckenzie said.

McKenzie says the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

"It appears that the minibus left the road and careened down a very steep embankment overturning several times which made the rescue more difficult," he said.

Preliminary reports indicate the taxi involved in Thursday night’s horror crash near Greytown in central KZN should never have been on the road in the first place.

The province’s Transport Department visited the families of the deceased yesterday.

"The people that died were travelling in a minibus taxi - from Greytown to Umsimba. The preliminary report from the police indicates that the minibus was not roadworthy, it was overloaded and it did not have an operating license. The taxi was not supposed to be on the road at all," spokesperson, Mluleki Mntungwa said.
