Updated | By Lauren Beukes
KwaZulu-Natal police say Friday morning's fatal shooting in Amanzimtoti is being investigated as part of a cable theft case in Clansthal.
In the early hours of this morning on the R102 near Crocworld, three men were caught by security guards loading overhead copper cables into a vehicle.
Police say when they spotted the guards, they dropped some of the cables and opened fire while fleeing.
Spokesperson Thenjiswa Ngcobo says the guards fired back as the thieves drove away.
"Charges of attempted murder, tampering with essential infrastructure and theft were opened at Umkomaas police station for investigation."

"The same vehicle was found abandoned this morning at 07:00 on Tacoma Road in Amanzimtoti. Police found the body of a 25-year-old man seated in the passenger seat with a gunshot wound."
The vehicle was searched and the cables were recovered.
It's alleged the other suspects dumped the car when they realised their injured accomplice had died.
An inquest docket was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS.
