More people were killed in South Africa in the three months to the end of last year than compared to the previous reporting period.
Police Minister Bheki Cele says murders went up by 8.9 percent between October and December.
He released the crime statistics for the third quarter of the reporting period on Friday.
"Five-hundred-and-sixty-two more people were killed in South Africa between October and December compared to the same period in 2020.

"Out of the 6 859 people killed in the country, 902 of them were women and 352 were children. Two hundred and thirty-two of the overall murders were as a result of domestic violence. Twenty-seven SAPS officers were killed, on and off duty, during this time."
Cele says while fewer rapes were reported, over 11 000 cases were opened.
"This is a decrease of 903 rape cases, compared to the previous reporting period. All nine provinces recorded decreases in rape cases. Over 5 012 of the rape incidents took place at the home of the victim or the home of the rapist.
"Six-hundred-and-seventy-four rapes were domestic violence related and 632 of rape cases in this category involved female victims and 42 were males."

They were followed by Lusikisiki SAPS in the Eastern Cape.
