Video: Sbahle Mpisane takes her first steps one year after crash
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
"I cannot describe how mentally challenging it was," says Sbahle about walking unassisted for the first time since her near-fatal car crash.
Sbahle Mbahle made some major progress in her road to recovery this week.
The fitness trainer took her first few steps on Wednesday - nearly one year after being involved in an horrific crash in August last year.
The 26-year-old was admitted to ICU on Women's Day after her BMW 4 series veered off the road on Margaret Mncadi Avenue (formerly Victoria Embankment) and hit a tree before bursting into flames.
The jaws of life had to be used to remove her from the wreckage. She spent three weeks in an induced coma and "woke up to a body with almost 80% of its bones broken". Sbahle also had no memory of the accident and the two years before the crash were "blurry".

The road to recovery has not been easy for the star. She returned to the hospital in February for the "second part" of her recovery.
The socialite is working with a trainer to get her fitness back on track.

She has been attempting to walk for the past few months without much luck. That all changed this week when her mother helped her take three steps.
"It took a whole hour. I cannot describe how mentally challenging it was!" she said.
One day later she was able to take her first steps without any assistance.
"Today Zain encouraged me to try take a walk without focusing on the pain I’m facing. For some miraculous reason, calling my bodyguard to come take a video of me, made me mentally ready to walk and record this milestone. Love y’all & thank you for the constant support. It pushes me forward," Sbahle captioned a video.
