Hug a tree! DJ Sbu encourages South Africans to connect with nature
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
When last did you walk barefoot in your backyard or at a park and hug a tree?
DJ Sbu is known for sharing words of wisdom for business owners online, but the media personality recently had a different kind of message to share with his followers.
He took to TikTok to encourage people to get in touch with their spiritual side. He told his followers to awaken their "third eye" and spend more time in nature.
He added that once you are in tune with nature, your life will start changing.
“We are all spiritual beings, we are all energy. Everything that you are, you are transmitting and you are receiving... Hug a tree every day. Just once a day. Even if it’s just for five seconds... At least once a day, even if it’s for five minutes, walk barefooted," he said.

There were mixed reactions to DJ Sbu's message online. Some people ridiculed the entrepreneur and accused him of smoking weed.
"DJ Sbu sounds like those dudes who get high on weed and start talking about 'The System'," one man wrote.
Some said they would never be caught dead hugging a tree. But many people agreed with DJ Sbu's message.
"DJ Sbu is Right. Grounding yourself is therapeutic. So hug a tree, let your feet connect with the soil and grass. Walk naked in the sun and eat raw liver," 'Mr Smeg' wrote.
We're not sure about eating raw liver but we don't see the harm in hugging a tree!
According to the Ecohappiness Project, hugging a tree can make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Clinical psychologist Stone Kraushaar, who is also known as 'The Hug Doctor', advises people to hug a tree for at least 21 seconds.
He recommends the time because that is how long it takes for the oxytocin hormone to be released into your body. Oxytocin is nicknamed the "love drug" because it helps you feel good.
“A good embrace—a hug—squeezes every ounce of fear, worry, and negativity out of your spirit, leaving you with nothing but warmth, inner peace, and a feeling of connection," the Ecohappiness Project quoted Dr Kraushaar as saying.
