Dua Lipa denies claims she is performing at the Qatar World Cup

Dua Lipa is setting the record straight following persistent rumours that she will be performing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. 

Sunday's opening ceremony has already been marred by controversy, with many stars reportedly refusing to participate due to the country's alleged human rights violations. 

News that the 'One Kiss' singer will be singing at the ceremony was met with excitement and disappointment, but Dua Lipa has denied that she will be making an appearance. 

"There is a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar. I will not be performing and nor have I ever been involved in any negotiation to perform," the 27-year-old wrote on her Instagram Stories. 

"I will be cheering England on from afar and I look forward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup."

Meanwhile, BTS star Jung Kook has confirmed that he will be performing at the Al-Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on Sunday. Jung Kook will also feature on the tournament's official soundtrack.

"Proud to announce that Jung Kook is part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Soundtrack & will perform at the World Cup opening ceremony. Stay tuned!" BTS tweeted on Monday.

Robbie Williams, Shakira, Black Eyed Peas, and J Balvin are also set to perform at the opening ceremony.

Football star David Beckham has come under fire for being an ambassador for the 2022 World Cup. The 47-year-old has appeared in several promotional videos for the event in Qatar. 

Members of the LGBTQI community have urged David to back out of his reported £10-million deal with Qatar. FIFA has assured gay fans that they will be safe during the tournament, while Qatar officials told CNN that the event will be an “inclusive, safe tournament”. 

British comedian Joe Lycett says David's “status as a gay icon will be shredded” if he does not back out of his ambassadorship. 

“Homosexuality is illegal, punishable by imprisonment and, if you’re Muslim, possibly even death,” he said in a video shared on Instagram.
