Dr Tumi and his wife arrested for allegedly defrauding National Lotteries Board of R1.5m

The Gospel star and his wife were released on bail of R5,000 each.
South African mega Gospel star Dr Tumi and his wife, Kgaogelo Makweya, were arrested on Tuesday by the Hawk's Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in Johannesburg.
The singer was arrested on R1.5-million fraud allegations.
According to a media statement from the HAWKS, it is alleged that the suspects, Dr Tumi and his wife Kgaogelo Makweya, were listed as committee members at a non-profit organisation, and they allegedly submitted altered grant application documents to the National Lotteries Board for approval of funds on projects in 2018.

The couple, together with their co-accused Christopher Tshivule and Thomas Ndadza, allegedly altered information on the documents submitted to the National Lotteries in September 2018. The media statement reports that an amount of over R1.5-million was transferred to a private bank account and the couple received approximately R760,000 from the funds.
Dr Tumi and his wife handed themselves in at the Hawk's Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Johannesburg office and were escorted by their attorney. They were subsequently charged with fraud.
The couple appeared at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court and were granted bail of R3,000 each.
Their case was postponed to 7 May 2021.
