Voter registration weekend, jab campaign to be integrated
The Health Department plans to use the upcoming voter registration weekend to get more people vaccinated against Covid-19.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) this week said voter registration would take place next weekend on 18th and 19th ahead of the 1 November municipal elections.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla on Friday said that as of Thursday, 10.5 million citizens had been inoculated and 14.3 million jabs administered.
He says they want to have jabbed 70% of the population by December, at a rate of 300 000 people per day.
"Our aim is to integrate the registration weekend with the vaccination campaign.
"Our current target for vaccination is the same age group 18 years and over as the voting age group, which is also 18 years and over and therefore, there is very good alignment in this regard.
"We advise voters and candidates to be vaccinated to ensure that we have safe local government elections on 1 November."
