Updated | By Eva Chipa
The Department of Health has announced that individuals between the age of 12 and 17 now qualify for a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
The announcement was made on Thursday after a circular was released stating that children 12 years and older will now be eligible to receive two doses of Pfizer.
“The SMS messages have been sent to those who qualify for their second vaccination. Adolescents who received their first dose while they were 17 years old, subsequently turned 18 can now receive their second vaccinations,” says spokesperson for the department Foster Mohale.
This comes as the South African Health Products Authority (SAHPRA) announced the approval of a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine -marking it the third dose- in individuals aged 18 years and older.
Mohale says now the Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaala will be advised on how to schedule booster shots for the public.
“The matter of a third (booster) dose of Pfizer for the adult population was approved by the regulator, SAHPRA, this means that the Vaccine Ministerial Advisory Committee can now advise the Minister on when to proceed with boosters for those who has Pfizer primary schedule vaccinations.”
Mohale added that they will make a formal announcement on Friday and also explain the changes to the vaccination schedules.
