SA’s Covid-19 deaths surpass 85 000

South Africa’s national Covid-19 death toll has surpassed the 85 000 mark, after 125 more related fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours leading up to Monday evening.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports that there were 2 640 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the country’s total infections to 2 860 835.
The new infections maintained a sustained downward trend for four consecutive days.
The institute says the latest increase represents a 10.4% positivity rate.
The Eastern Cape has surpassed KwaZulu-Natal with the highest number of new daily infections, at 864 new cases.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded 601 new cases.
“The majority of new cases today are from Eastern Cape (33%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (23%). Free State accounted for 10%; Western Cape and Northern Cape accounted for 9% each; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; Gauteng Province accounted for 6%; North West accounted for 4%, and Limpopo accounted for <1% of today’s new cases,” said the NICD in a statement.
Limpopo recorded the lowest with 13 new cases identified on Monday.
There has been an increase of 163 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 10 140 people currently receiving treatment at both private and public facilities.
