Passport out of pandemic is to get jabbed: Zikalala
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says our passport out of the pandemic is more people getting vaccinated.
He says recent advice from medical experts on the latest surge in Covid-19 cases has revealed there is still a high number of unvaccinated people.
Zikalala gave the latest Covid-19 developments in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday during a pop-up vaccination drive at Churches and hostels in Lamontville.
"Covid-19 is unfortunately deadly. Everyone knows someone who has died or been affected by Covid-19.
"This is serious and is even affecting our economic recovery programme. The experts have also noted that the risk of an adverse outcome from the virus is minimal for persons who are inoculated.
"It is now abundantly clear that our passport out of this pandemic, which must take us back to normal life and the better functioning of the economy, will be determined by us taking the vaccine.
Within the latest 24 hours, KZN had 1 340 new infections and 59 274 active cases.
Over 14 000 people have lost their lives due to the virus, while 45 049 people recovered. To date, only 2.3 million jabs have been administered in the province.
"56 percent of people who have vaccinated are those who are above 60. 26 percent are those of the age 50 to 59. Four percent are those of the age 35 - 45. Five percent are those of the age 18 to 45."
