Omicron positive patients showing mild symptoms: SAMA
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A South African doctor, who was one of the first experts to flag the presence of a new Covid-19 variant, says people infected with the Omicron variant have had mild symptoms so far.
Dr Angelique Coetzee is the chairperson of the South African Medical Association (SAMA) board.
She says, for now, hospitals aren't seeing an influx of Covid patients who contracted the coronavirus variant named Omicron.
Coetzee says there's a lot that still needs to be uncovered about this variant of concern.
"What we are seeing currently with the Omicron viral infections going around or Covid-19 disease is that it is a predominately mild disease and people are not very sick.
"Therefore, the travel ban that was imposed on South Africa all of a sudden didn't make any logical sense to us. It's still early days."
