The five PC games we will never forget

Those late nights and free time between studying for exams were spent clicking away at your computer, soaking up the magic which was provided by your game of choice.

While we now have access to a plethora of gaming options thanks to the consoles on the market, it is difficult to match the sheer excitement and wonder we all experienced while sitting in front of a computer screen back in the day.

So, in order to celebrate the games which have come and gone from the lives of us nearly middle-aged people, let's take a look back at five titles which many of us would give an arm and leg to go back and play.

Doom

You know those first-person shooters you love today - or, dare we say it, your kids love? Well, ‘Doom’ is their father. ‘Doom’ is the pioneer of first-person shooters. The original. The daddy. One of the only games that as a kid you could experience serious violence without having your parents shout at you for playing. It was everything a young child first getting into gaming wanted. It was violent. It was fun. It had blood. It had guns. It was fast-paced and made you jump – all at the same time. It was a masterpiece for the time. Goosebumps!

Championship Manager Franchise

There are few games which consumed as much time as the Championship Manager franchise. The game was as addictive as they come, with the need to lead your football side to glory far outweighing your need to eat, sleep, shower, or go to school. The fact that you could take a small side, and after investing your life into their plight, you could take them all the way to the top and achieve the type of glory many only dream of. When it comes to addictive computer games, this was the main culprit, as a quick few minutes often turned into hours of fun.

Duke Nukem 3D

Don't you dare try and deny the fact that you absolutely loved this game. Just like 'Doom', it had violence, but it also had scantly clad women, rude language, and monsters. This is literally everything a teenage boy wants in a video game - and you could hide the content from your parents by saying that it was purely an action title. Not only was this game fun to play, but it was also testing, which meant you had to complete some stages over and over again to reach the end. With all the beforementioned fun and scandal, having to restart levels wasn't actually such a bad thing in the end...

Command & Conquer: Red Alert

The legendary ‘Command & Conquer: Red Alert’ was a real-time strategy game. Basically, the game revolved around taking control of Allied or Soviet forces in what was a fight for mainland Europe. Players built armies and infrastructure to take on the opposition. The mining of ores and minerals provided credits for you to use in that regard. It was a rather easy game to play in terms of controls, while the user interface made it a hit with fans. Each side of the battlefield had its strengths and weaknesses, meaning once you got to know the ins and outs of the game, you could tactically take on the opposition with confidence. A true classic!

SimCity

If you were addicted to SimCity, well, then you clearly had no life outside of the house. This game was incredibly addictive and time-consuming, meaning your friends were pixels, rather than those of the flesh kind. The more you played, the more invested you became into what you were creating. The bigger your city became, the more responsibility you had on your shoulders. Missing your mother's calls for dinner was the least of your worries, as the wooden spoon she used to punish your lazy behind with was far less stressful than seeing your city fall to ruin. What a game, what a time to be alive!
