Looking for ways to brighten your under arms? Here are two home remedies to try.
There are many causes of dark underarms.
It can either be a symptom of acanthosis nigricans - a skin condition that causes a dark discoloration in body folds and creases, or it can be caused by:
- Overuse of deodorants
"Deodorants have paraben, alcohol, fragrances etc. that can irritate the skin and cause inflammation leading to thickening and darkening of the skin over time. Many antiperspirants also use aluminum as an active ingredient, which clogs up the sweat ducts causing dryness and pigmentation" says Dr. Simal Soin, Founder of Aayna Clinic.
- Not moisturising properly after shaving.
- Bacterial infections that are caused by excessive sweating.
- Wearing tight clothes that cause friction.
- Smoking, which causes a type of hyperpigmentation called smokers' melanosis.

Remedies for dark armpits
Aloe Vera is one of the recommended natural remedies for dark armpits.
It has antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties and is often found in beauty products because of the benefits it has for the skin.
"Aloe vera is known as the medicinal plant that contains antibacterial properties that soothe inflamed skin and lighten discoloured armpits. Massage your underarms with the aloe vera gel, letting it dry for about 20 minutes. It helps to remove dark underarms,” renowned dermatologist Dr Ajay Rana told Health Shots.
Lemon is also one of the trusted home remedies for dark underarms. To use it, you need to cut thick slices of lemon. Then rub the slices on your underarms for about 10 minutes, then rinse your underarms with cool water, dry them, and apply a moisturiser.
Potatoes are also a home remedy used to help remove dark underarms. Wash a potato, cut a thick slice, and put it under your armpits or massage your armpits with it for about five to ten minutes. Rinse off with cool water and moisturise.
