The 165-millimetres of rain that fell in Durban on Monday is more than what was experienced in January alone, and February and March combined.
200 millimetres fell in Margate on the south coast, while Richards Bay and Pietermaritzburg recorded 54.2 and 38 millimetres respectively.
Areas south of Durban were among the hardest hit, with Umlazi, Chatsworth and Amanzimtoti feeling the full brunt of the storm.
President Cyril Ramaphosa and other senior government, provincial and municipal officials are on the ground assessing the damage today
In some cases, entire roads caved in and homes were swallowed.
The weather service says more rain is expected later today, with showers and thundershowers predicted across most of the province from this afternoon and into the evening.
