Whether you just want to hike or get a view of the world from on top of a mountain, then Cathedral Peak is the mountain to visit.
Kwazulu-Natal is blessed with many great natural sites. It is also home to beautiful mountains.
One of its most noticeable mountains is the Cathedral Peak found in the Drakensberg.
So, if you are in and around the great Zulu land, here are five reasons to visit the Cathedral Peak, which is also called the Mponjwana or Little Horn.
- The 3,004 m (9,856 ft) high freestanding mountain is found within the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site – a spectacular place to visit.
- The mountain is a hiker’s paradise. You can enjoy a 20km round trip hike from the Cathedral with an elevation gain of about 1,665 m.
- The Mike’s Pass will give access to the crest of the Little Berg, south of Cathedral Peak, where you will get to witness the most breath-taking views of the central Ukhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site.
- The mountain offers a perfect and romantic mountain getaway where you can book into the Cathedral Peak Hotel – one of South Africa's premier resort hotels. You can enjoy daily guided hikes, including bird watching and Bushman San Art Sites when you stay at the Cathedral Peak Hotel.
- It is often said that the best things in life are free. The good news is that there are no entrance fees to walk in the park at the Cathedral Park.
So, whether you visit the mountain on your own or take your loved ones along, Cathedral Peak will not disappoint.
The valley is a 3-hour drive from King Shaka International Airport in Durban or 4 hours from Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
