It's time for the 44th Durban International Film Festival
The memories of dressing up and going to consume films from different storytellers is indeed a great way to reminisce.
When I think about the Durban International Film Festival, the film student in me ignites.
Feelings and memories flood my mind and I get transported back in time to my Uni days.
Where culture was so much a part of being a student. The culture of becoming, of exploring, of learning, of discovering.
It was definitely a different time. But the mere engagement with such a powerful medium, gives me goosebumps.
The 44th Durban International Film Festival is returning this July, and I have to say, it a quite an esteemed event for both film students and the like in KZN.
"The 44th Durban International Film Festival, presented by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, is presented with support from the National Film and Video Foundation, Kwazulu-Natal Film Commission, the Durban Film Office, the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Avalon Group."
And this year, internationally celebrated film, Sira, which won the Panorama Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival in February this year, will open the 44th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) presented by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts at the SunCoast Cine Centre from 20 to 30 July 2023.

“I am so very honoured that my film Sira will open the Durban International Film Festival. It’s really a miracle. A year ago, during our difficult production, we thought the film would never see the light. And here we are today, opening one of the greatest film festivals in Africa. It’s a blessing,” says film director Apolline Traoré.
Just hearing the director's words is the true epitome of how things can redirect and come to exist. And with film, a media that allows one to delve deeper into a very specific form of messaging, we are certain this year's films are going to impress.
The 44th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) will take place from 20 July to 30 July 2023. This year’s festival promises an interesting international programme that is available on ccadiff.ukzn.ac.za. Tickets are available at www.cinecentre.co.za.
