Five fabulous Julie Andrews musical memories
Singer and actress Julie Andrews celebrates her 85th birthday on Thursday – so East Coast Gold will be featuring some of her most-loved songs from the many musicals she’s starred in over the decades, including 'Mary Poppins', 'My Fair Lady', and 'The King and I'.
Julie Andrews was born on 1 October 1935. She has been in the entertainment industry since 1948. She made her Broadway debut in ‘The Boy Friend’ in 1954. But her big break came when she landed a role in the film, ‘Mary Poppins’, which was released in 1964.
Andrews won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the title role and she also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
Acting is not her only talent. Andrews is a brilliant singer.
The star has also enjoyed a lot of success when it comes to her music career.
She released her debut solo album, ‘The Lass with the Delicate Air’, in 1957. The album featured the World War II anthem, ‘London Pride’. She went on to release over ten albums which have been very successful.
In honour of her birthday, East Coast Gold looks at five fabulous musical memories of the star.
'I Could Have Danced All Night'
In the year 1958, Julie Andrews got to perform the song ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ on ‘The Dinah Shore Chevy Show’.
The song comes from the musical ‘My Fair Lady’, which Julie was starring in at the time. The classic hit was written by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner.
'Wouldn't It Be Lovely'
At the 'Ed Sullivan Show' in 1961, Andrews captivated the audience with the song, 'Wouldn’t It Be Lovely'.
She performed the song with Richard Burton and Robert Goulet. The perfomace was mind-blowing.
The original track comes from the 1956 play, 'My Fair Lady'.
'The Sound Of Music'
'The Sound Of Music' is one of the most memorable songs from Andrews in the film with the same name.
It featured stars such as Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Charmian Carr, Ben Wright, and Anna Lee.
The music was composed by Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers, and Irwin Kostal.
Andrews' voice makes the song incredible.
'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'
'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' from the movie 'Mary Poppins' is a classic hit.
It was released in 1964. The song was written by Sherman Brothers.
'My Favorite Things'
'My Favorite Things' is taken from 'The Sound Of Music' by Robert Wise. It was a big hit in the 1960s.
