Birthday Tribute: Joan Jett turns 64
Updated | By Poelano Malema
East Coast Gold plays Joan Jett's biggest classics this Thursday in honour of her 64th birthday.
Joan Jett is a name that needs no introduction, especially to Rock 'N Roll lovers. She has been named the Queen of Rock 'N Roll and has a huge global following.
Her love for music started at a very early age. While many girls would choose dolls and toys, at age 13 Joan asked her parents to buy her a guitar for Christmas. It is no surprise that she made it onto Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarist of all time.
In 1975 at the age of 15, the star started the all female band, 'The Runaways'. She was reportedly the first female artist to do so. The group later split.
Joan played a huge role in opening doors for women, especially in the entertainment industry. She broke many stereotypes and is a proud feminist.

After being rejected by over 20 labels, Joan started her own record label, 'Blackheart Records', in 1980, becoming one of the first women to own a record label.
She is the name behind one of Rock's greatest anthems, 'I Love Rock 'N Roll', which was released in 1981. The song sold over two-million copies.
One of the most famous songs released by Joan and the Blackhearts is 'I Hate Myself for Loving You'. The single has over 89-million views on YouTube. Watch it below.
