There is now an easier, faster way to renew your car licence in South Africa.
At the end of January 2022, the South African Post Office launched an online renewal process for all motorists whose vehicle licences were due to expire.
According to the Post office, there has been a healthy increase in applications using the online option.

The Post Office has seen more than 37,000 licences renewed online to date.
There were teething problems with the system, but they have now been rectified.
The full renewal process, which includes payment, is done online.

Collecting your vehicle licence can be done in one of two ways:
- The SA Post Office can deliver the disc to the customer at a delivery fee of R75.
- The disc can be collected free of charge from the Post Office branch selected by the customer.
Payment is done safely and securely through your bank’s Masterpass App, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for Android devices or the Apple App Store for Apple devices.
The turnaround time is estimated at 10 working days.
The customer will receive SMSs that would have information given as to payments, collection, as well as when the disc should arrive.

As indicated by the Post Office, this process of renewing your vehicle licence doesn't take away from the old way of doing things.
"Many customers do still prefer the old simple way of paying their licence and leave immediately with the new licence and they can still do that at a Post Office branch", says the Post Office spokesperson.
