In 1878, firemen from the all-black (African American) Engine Company 21 always arrived first at fires after discovering that sliding down a long pole between floors saved them time rather than using stairs.
Other stations quickly adopted the fire pole.

They were stacking hay on the third floor when another firefighter reacted to a fire alarm by sliding from the third floor to the first floor down the pole that had been temporarily put in place to allow for hoisting hay bales.

When Mariya Oktyabrskaya's husband was killed during WWII, she sold all her possessions to pay for a tank and petitioned the USSR to let her drive it herself. She named it, 'Fighting Girlfriend', and killed so many Nazis she was awarded the Soviet Union's highest military honour.

Wild pigs in Canada will burrow themselves under the snow to stay warm in the freezing temperatures. These icy shelters are technically known as ‘pigloos’.
