Couple opens wedding gift nine-years later!

Who could possibly wait that long before opening a gift they have received?
Most people tend to open gifts as soon as they receive them.

That's the whole point, isn't it?
However, the story of one couple's unopened wedding gift might change your mind.

The couple submitted their story to a Facebook group called, Love What Matters.
The group is full of, you guessed it, love stories. From platonic love to family love and everything in between.
This couple's story stands out because it's not just your basic marriage story, there is a deeper lesson to be learned from it.

The story begins with them reminiscing over the gifts they received all those years ago on their wedding day.
Katy (the wife) tries to recall which gift has meant the most to the couple during their life together.

They then realise that the gift that had the biggest influence on their life, strangely enough, was the one that has remained unopened.
The card attached to the present had said: “Do not open until your 1st disagreement.”

Now you might be thinking: Nine years of marriage and not one single argument, disagreement, or fight has taken place, which would then lead to the opening of this present?
Katy explains further.
Now, there had obviously been plenty of disagreements, arguments, and slammed doors throughout our 9 years. There were even a couple of instances where we both considered giving up… but we never opened the box.- Kathy Gunn

At the end of the day, the couple had been too stubborn. After every fight or difficult situation they would be unwilling to open the box and would rather reassess the situation.
They were terrified that the opening of the box would symbolise their failure because what if this wasn't the worst fight? What if the worst was yet to come and they didn't have this box to save them then?

All along, we assumed that the contents of that box held the key to saving a marriage – an age-old trick – unbeknownst to us rookies. After all, my Great Aunt and Uncle had been married for nearly half a century. So, we thought the box would save “us” – and in a way it did. That box went beyond what I believe my Great Aunt had intended. It was by far the greatest wedding gift of all.- Kathy Gunn

In the end, they decided to open the box because it had become clear that after all these years, the only tools they really needed to fix or mend their relationship were within them all along.

Well, there were two notes, one for each partner, with very specific instructions.
Kathy's note instructed her to "get a pizza" or something to eat that they both liked and "get a bath ready".
The instructions within Brandon's note read that he should "get flowers and a bottle of wine."
