It's not something that you would normally think about, its one of those ordinary things in life. But have you ever stopped to think about how often you should be washing your pyjamas?

We ask this question because one of Jane's colleagues recently revealed that he only washes his pyjamas once every two weeks, and everyone around him was simply disgusted by his comment.

To find out more about pyjama washing, we decided to do some digging to get some answers. The Guardian reported that Professor Sally Bloomfield, chair of the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene spoke about the dangers of not washing your pyjamas regularly.

"We all carry certain organisms that are potentially harmful to us if we get them in the wrong place and are potentially harmful to other people if they get transferred to them,” Prof Bloomfield said.

So how often should you be washing your PJ's to rid them of these potentially harmful organisms? Well, Bloomfield suggests that once a week is enough, however, if they are dirtier than usual, feel free to throw them in the wash. Remember that the more your wash, the more it affects the environment.

We asked Jane about pyjamas washing in her household.

"I have three nighties that are in constant circulation, so on average, I use it for two nights and then it's onto the next one. The kids usually have a new set of PJ's nightly as they go through more wear and tear with toothpaste, marmite and whatever else. Our gowns go in for a weekly wash," she said.
