Keri's Couch: Adoption process - where, how, and how much?
Updated | By Nokuthula Ngcobo
This week on Keri's Couch, Keri takes a closer look at adoption. Justin Foxton and his wife Cathy are founders of The Baby Home, which they established in 2010, as a safe haven for children while seeking a forever home.
Whether you are unable to conceive or have always wanted to give a child a loving and warm home, the process of adoption can seem overwhelming when you don’t have all the facts.
This week on Keri's Couch, Keri takes a closer look at adoption. Having spoken to Jo from The Baby Home and Styles Mbatha, a 27-year-old who was adopted, she wanted to know more about the various steps a couple or an individual can take in order to adopt a child.
Often, many couples assume that adopting a baby at birth or at a very young age is the best time to adopt. While this is acceptable, Justin Foxton from The Baby Home and The Peace Agency (an NPO that runs and administers a safe haven for abandoned and orphaned babies and babies given up for adoption) tells Keri that adopting toddlers is encouraged. "We need to rejig our thinking slightly and certainly the two, three, four, five-year old children are desperately in need of homes," he says.
Who is allowed to make an adoption? Can same-sex couples adopt a child? What happens if the parents change their mind? These are questions many people ask.
Foxton tells Keri about the process of adoption, from the very first step to the screening process and the actual adoption. But can same-sex couples or single parents adopt a child? What happens in a situation when the parents who are giving up a child for adoption change their mind?
