Five spots in your kitchen dirtier than your toilet!
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
The kitchen is said to be the heart of the home, but it is also potentially the dirtiest place in the home too.
Just the mere thought that the kitchen, out of all places, could be dirtier than your toilet makes our skin crawl, but this useful information might help you pay more attention to kitchen hygiene.
Here are 5 of the dirtitest places in your kitchen:
1. The Dishwashing sponge
Because the sponge is always wet and moist, it's like bacterial heaven. According to Today.com, 15 percent of sponges in a random study had salmonella growing in them.
Solution
Use paper towels or antibacterial wipes to clean kitchen counters and microwave sponges daily for 1 to 2 minutes every day to sanitize them.

2. The kitchen sink
Everything is thrown into the kitchen sink - sloppy left over food, raw meat blood from the chopping board and dirty dishes. "There's more fecal bacteria in a sink than there is in a flushed toilet", according to Today.com
Solution
Wash the sink daily with hot, soapy water and disinfectant wipes

3. The cutting board
With 200 times more coliform bacteria than a toilet seat, cutting boards
are hot beds of germs. When used to cut up poultry and meats, they can
also have salmonella and campylobacter bacteria.
Solution
Wash the the cutting board with extremely hot, soapy water. If you have a dish-washing machine, put the cutting board in there to kill more germs. Also, colour code your chopping boards according to their use - have a separate cutting board for meat and vegetables etc.
4. The fridge door handle
How often do you open your fridge? How often do you touch the fridge door handle when cooking or after chopping meat or vegetables? E. coli, salmonella and more can be growing on that handle every time you touch it with your hands and with a sponge.
Solution
Give the fridge good wipe-down every day with a disinfecting kitchen wipe.
5. The kitchen counter
This is where most of the action takes place in the kitchen - chopping, cutting, cracking, pouring and using that dirty sponge to wipe it all off.
Solution
Use chopping boards as often as possible, clean spills with towel papers and clean the surface with disinfectant wipes!
