WATCH: Is this the new way to clean tripe before cooking?
Updated | By East Coast Radio
We know that toothpaste is efficient in cleaning our teeth, but tripe?
As South Africans, it is part of our genes to be explorative and adventurous with the foods we eat.
Plus it is our resourcefulness that gets us by each month, something that we learnt from our ancestors.
So it is only natural that we would migrate to foods that are cost-effective, traditional, and believed to be nourishing.
Tripe is known as a traditional delicacy and is a "cut of meat that comes from the stomach lining of farm animals, including cows, pigs, sheep and goats." (MSN)
Preparing different types of offal is something of an art, but when it comes to tripe, it is usually prepped to some extent when you buy it from the butcher.
So when you get it, you are meant to just soak it in water with sea salt and vinegar, which is said to remove all impurities.
However, not everyone goes for the traditional way of cleaning it.
"Self-taught chef and recipe developer and founder of The Kitchen Muse, Bukie Akinmade recently took to Instagram to detail that one of her followers sent her a video showing how one woman cleans the tripe." (MSN)
She labelled this version of cleaning as "Crazy" and we can understand why... it is unheard of!
