SEE: When a typo at Shoprite can cost you money...
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Do you swipe your savings card or not?
We are all in for a good saving, so when we see those pop-up signs in the aisles, we can firmly say that we take some time to have a look at what's going on special. Because everyone appreciates saving a rand or two...
Of course, we all have our own preferred retailers, whether that has to do with convenience or just plain old preference, each to their own, right? And, of course, each retailer has their way of marketing and advertising to their customer.
Whether that is in the form of mid-month sales or daily markdowns, customers appreciate a good saving at any time of the month, because we all have been affected by the pandemic in some way.
However, when the savings sign shown doesn't work out to a saving but rather you paying more than you would at the normal price, then what would that be called? Daylight robbery?
We briefly remember this being something that advertisers did (some still do), where they add a '99 cents' at the end of the number so that in the mind of the customer, it seems like they are saving, even though it is literally a cent shy.
But in this case, we honestly think that someone wasn't paying attention to what they were typing out, it was a typo gone wrong. A recent tweet by @KulaniCool showed that the Shoprite Xtra Savings offer would actually cost more than if you were to buy the items individually.

Tweeps were left laughing out loud. We guess that's a good thing considering that this could easily have turned ugly. But it's clearly a mistake and to find the fun in it is the best thing to do.
It just goes to show though that we should always pay attention to the prices before filling up our trolleys. Don't believe everything you read! And in case you didn't pay attention in maths class, then use your phone calculator to make sure...
