Robin Thicke STOLE Marvin Gaye tune!
Updated | By tanstan fourie
Things are not looking good for Pop star Robin Thicke. His wife left him last year. And now, a court has slapped him with a massive fine after ruling that he did indeed plagiarise late soul singer Marvin Gaye's number one hit, Got to Give It Up.
The Los Angeles court also ordered Robin and co-writer Pharrell Williams to pay Gaye's family more than $7.3 million! That amount is nearly half of what Blurred Lines brought in in royalties. How hectic!
Lawyers for Gaye's family argued that the songs share similar bass lines and instrumentation. They used a mashup of the songs to make their case in court.
You probably remember that in 2013, Robin said several times in interviews that he and Pharrell had been trying to write something like Gaye's hit.
He recently told the court that he had been drunk and high on prescription painkillers during the songwriting session adding that Williams wrote the song alone.
Outside the courthouse, Nona Gaye was emotional Tuesday afternoon talking about her father.
