Springboks escape fire pit explosion

World Cup winning Springbok players RG Snyman and Damian de
Allende have suffered burns following a fire pit explosion recently.
The pair, who have just been selected in the Springbok squad for the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour, were with team-mates CJ Stander and Mike Haley when the incident happened.
Springbok centre De Allende, who was speaking to SuperSport on Tuesday, mentioned that the four players were lucky that the injuries weren’t a lot worse.
“We were just sitting around the fire and one of the boys threw a bit of petrol over the fire and then it caught his hand and he just tried to put it down on the floor and then the whole thing caught alight and exploded," he said to the broadcaster.
"They thought it was a lot worse when we went into hospital on Saturday night but when we saw the specialist on Sunday he said it wasn’t as bad as they got told.
"We should be okay in a few weeks hopefully."
Haley and Stander will be able to return to training this week following the burns they sustained to their hands, however for De Allende and Snyman the road to recovery will take longer as they suffered more significant burns.
"De Allende and Snyman, who sustained more substantial burns to legs, hands and face, will not take part in their respective training and rehabilitation programmes and will meet a specialist again later in the week,” a statement from Munster said via AFP.
For coach Johan van Graan he is relieved that all the players are going to make a full recovery in a situation that could have been a lot more serious.
"We are hugely relieved that the lads are all OK,” he said through the club statement.
"The players have all been treated and are being well looked after, with Damian and RG meeting the specialist again later this week to review next steps of their recovery."
