Sports Minister strips CSA of control
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Cricket South Africa will no longer be recognised as the
controlling body for cricket in South Africa it was announced by the Minister
of Sport and Recreation Mr Nathi Mthethwa on Friday.
Following an extended impasse between the Members' Council
and the Interim Board over the structure of the new board, the Minister of Sport
and Recreation has decided to invoke his powers in terms of section 13 of the
National Sport and Recreation Act.
By exercising his powers Mr Mthethwa is trying to force the Members' Council into accepting the new memorandum of incorporation that has caused a stand off between the council and the Interim Board.
By stripping CSA of their control he also withdraws funding for the national federation and puts on hold all national team assignments.
This now gives the Members' Council until Tuesday to agree to the terms of the new MOI which includes a majority independent board.
Chairperson of the Interim Board Dr Stavros Nicolaou has put the ball firmly in the members' council's court saying they are the only ones that can resolve the current stand-off.
“Only the Members' Council can retrieve the situation now by resolving to support an expedited procedure in terms of section 60 of the Companies Act.”
Fortunately for CSA both national men's and women's teams don't have any matches for the foreseeable future.
