Mickelson claims historic PGA Championship
Phil Mickelson notched up a sixth major and became the
oldest player to win a major when he won the PGA Championship on Sunday.
The 50 year-old not only broke the age record by two years, but broke an eight year major drought when he won at Kiawah Island by two shots.
'Lefty' as he is affectionately known, dropped to 115th on the world rankings but defied the longest course in major history to win a second PGA Championship crown.
"It has been an incredible day," Mickelson said via AFP. "Certainly one of the moments I'll cherish my entire life."
For a player that is just short of 51 to win a major championship is a feat that very few would have expected, however for Mickelson he had the confidence he could produce a historic result.
"I don't know how to describe the feeling of excitement and fulfillment and accomplishment to do something of this magnitude when very few people thought that I could.
"This is just an incredible feeling because I believed that it was possible but yet everything was saying it wasn't," Mickelson said. "I hope others find that inspirational."
Mickelson is a favourite with fans throughout the world and with 10 000 patrons, the most at a major championship since the Open in 2019, the spectators rallied around the California native.
"I don't think I've ever had an experience like that, so thank you for that," he added. "Slightly unnerving, but exceptionally awesome.
"I've never had that experience and to see that, to feel that kind of excitement and enthusiasm, and be at the forefront of that, was pretty special.
"That's a moment I'll always, always cherish."
