Frylinck the big winner at Dolphins awards
Updated | By Nick Tatham
After announcing his
retirement from cricket last week, Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Rob
Frylinck capped off his stellar career with three awards at the Hollywoodbets
Dolphins Annual Awards at Mount Edgecombe recently, including the coveted Player
of the Year award.
It was an unprecedented season for the Dolphins who made the finals of all three competitions, sharing the Momentum One Day Cup, losing in the final of the Betway T20 Challenge and winning the sought-after 4-Day Domestic Series title.
Frylinck was influential in both of the white ball campaigns and showed his skill and experience with both the bat and ball to help the Dolphins to the finals, but the 36 year-old praised his team-mates for their efforts.
“It’s always a great feeling when you help a team succeed but the beauty of this group of players is that there were never players that always stood out,” Frylinck said at the awards ceremony.
“We had a side that was full of players that contributed consistently which made us successful.”
Frylinck also walked away with the awards for Betway T20 Challenge Player of the Season and Momentum One Day Cup Player of the Season.
Another player who was a vital part of the Dolphins success this season was white ball captain Keshav Maharaj who was another multi-award winner.
The Proteas left-arm spinner won the 4-Day Domestic Series Player of the Year award for his 34 wickets in the campaign and then topped that award by being voted as the Players’ Player of the Year.
There was one other player who was a multiple award winner. Ruan de Swardt walked away with the Newcomer of the Year Award as well as the Fielder of the Year prize.
De Swardt was influential with both the bat and the ball during his first full season of franchise cricket and his first season with the Dolphins which led to his awards.
The final award went to seamer Ottniel Baartman; Most Improved Player of the Season. In his first season with the Dolphins Baartman’s career took a major step forward when he was called up to the Proteas ODI squad for their tour of Pakistan.
It was unfortunate that he couldn’t travel with the squad however he will use that as fuel going into the new season.
KZN Cricket also paid tribute to players that have retired from the game including Frylinck, Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Cody Chetty.
