Protect workers from retrenchments: Cosatu

It comes as more than 2 000 Telkom employees are spending their last day at work today after opting for voluntary severance packages from the telecommunications giant.
The country's mining industry is also reported to be planning on collectively retrenching about 10 000 miners this year.
The trade union federation's Edwin Mkhize, whose members are attending a third and final day of its 12th Provincial Congress in Durban says workers do not have sufficient protection from their unions.
"It's the same issue that is actually subjecting our workers to vulnerability in terms of the conditions of service, in terms of wages and salaries companies pay to our members and we think that it's an issue that we need to address urgently," he said.
