Minister, KZN student leaders to meet over debt concerns

Student representatives from the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus and the Durban University of Technology will address the Minister of Higher Education on issues of historical student debt.

Minister Blade Nzimande will meet SRC leaders from tertiary institutions across the country today.
UKZN's Westville SRC spokesperson, Nash Khumalo feels students should be allowed to register despite how much money they owe.
"If things stand this way, surely we will join other universities. We have just sent our president to tell the minister that what they have presented to us is not enough. We are not asking, we are demanding," he said.
DUT's Sandile Nene echoed Khumalo's statement.
"When we are talking about historical debt, we talking about those students who have graduated but have not obtained their qualification because NSFAS has not fully paid their fees.
"We are also talking about those students who are still blocked by the system in terms of registering now. They can no longer become students in 2016 because NSFAS did not finish paying for their fees," he said.
Some students' leaders in Wits University have been protesting as they continue voicing their concerns over fees.
