Siv Ngesi weighs in on loadshedding: 'We are in trouble as a country'

Siv Ngesi is gatvol of South Africa's never-ending power cuts. The actor is now calling on the government to show the country's citizens what steps it is taking to end loadshedding. 

"Don’t you think it’s time for us to pressure the government to urgently present us with a plan that will end loadshedding or at least propose policies that will alleviate the pain loadshedding is inflicting on businesses & individuals?" he asked on Twitter. 

'The Woman King' actor also shared a video of himself venting his frustrations on the matter. 

"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that we are in trouble as a country. It is palpable, you can feel it in the air. We are in k*k, and that is the most South African way to put it," he said in a video posted last week and reshared on Twitter on Tuesday.

Siv likened South Africa to the Titanic, which sunk in 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage. 

"We are like the Titanic. This beautiful ship that everyone spoke about with all this potential. But one way or the other, the iceberg was there and we definitely have gone into the iceberg and we're sinking. And as we are sinking as a country, people are still stealing off this beautiful ship."

He added that what is happening is "absolute treason".

"When we hit the iceberg it was from the blatant incompetence and now the people who actually put us into the iceberg are still stealing, incompetent, and still do not care and have no plan. We as a people need to pressurise them to have a plan and to implement the plan because people's businesses are failing and people are dying because of this incompetence," Siv said. 

He ended his video by urging South Africans to come together. 

"Next year they will make sure the lights will be on before the elections. People, we need to come together and do more."

Many of Siv's social media followers agreed with his PSA. 

"I agree with you completely, what is more frustrating is the lack of planning and strategy to end this loadshedding. Why keep on telling us it can’t be solve this year. Give reasons why and then explain the plan to solve this so we are all on the same page. I’m speechless," one Twitter user replied. 

Another user added: "There's nothing to pressure, these videos will not help, let the vote do the talking! This is no time for emotions!"

But some social media users were less than impressed with the call to action. One man noted that many South Africans shunned a "national shutdown" organised by the EFF in protest of loadshedding. 

"This time around you'll march alone to [the] Union Building. We played our part during the national shutdown which you were against it," one tweep commented.
