‘Sarafina!’ returns to Cannes Film Festival

‘Sarafina!’ selected for the Cannes festival 2023

The South African film has been selected for the 2023 Official Selection - Cannes Classic.

'Sarafina!' will be returning to the Cannes Film Festival. 

The news was shared by renowned actor, Leleti Khumalo, who starred in the original film, which was released in 1992. 

Taking to Instagram, Khumalo revealed that the South African film will be screening at the 2023 Official Selection Cannes Classic. 

"Cannes Film Festival has invited Sarafina to screen in the 2023 Official Selection Cannes Classic," said Khumalo.

The actress said she is ecstatic about going back to the Cannes Film Festival. 

"That is so exciting. So I'm so exited to be going back there again," she said. 

The businesswoman spoke about the first time she got to be a part of the film festival. 

"I remember in 1992, Sarafina got a 20-minute standing ovation. It was so exciting. So I will be going back there to relive the moment. It is so exciting.

"Remember Sarafina is going to put South Africa on the map again," she said. 

'Sarafina!' is a film by the legendary Dr Mbongeni Ngema, who is a Grammy and Hollywood Image Award winner. 

It features Whoopi Goldberg, Somizi Mhlongo, John Kani, and the late Mary Twala.
