Lil Nas X dropped the release date for his debut album, ‘MONTERO’, in a creative, but controversial way.

The ‘Old Town Road’ hitmaker caused a stir on social media when he revealed he was "pregnant" with a 15-track album. PEOPLE magazine released images from his “pregnancy” photoshoot.

“SURPRISE! I can’t believe I’m finally announcing this. My little bundle of joy ‘MONTERO’ is due September 17, 2021,” Lil Nas X wrote on Twitter.

The 22-year-old told PEOPLE he was inspired to create the photoshoot after listening to Megan Thee Stallion’s verse on ‘Dolla Sign Slime’.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, this is amazing,' so I immediately called my stylist. She was like, 'Wow, this all comes together. Your album. Your baby.' I was like, 'Yeah, this is my baby, huh?' As a joke, she was like, 'Yeah, you should do a pregnancy shoot.' I was like, 'You know what? That's actually brilliant.'"

For Lil Nas X’s fans, this was just another day at the office for one of the music industry’s most creative musicians.

“Call it what you want but Lil Nas X is a marketing genius,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Lil Nax X gets y’all man every month! He’s a genius and he sends the message y’all just choose to miss it. He’s amazing & I love him,” another user added.

Some also say that the musician's creative vision for ‘MONTERO’ is pushing boundaries in the music industry and letting members of the LGBTQI community know it is okay to be their authentic selves.

“What @LilNasX is doin in the rap game is something we haven't seen before. The boundaries he's pushing makes ppl uncomfortable but authenticity goes a long way. when you live your truth and push back against the haters ppl are here for it. This is some dope artistry right here.”

But not everyone was feeling Lil Nas X’s creativity.

“I respect the man for doing him and his music’s not bad but it’s sad that celebs/influencers and media depend on over the top/leading toward cringe to gain attention and society just laps it up,” a Twitter user wrote.

One person pointed out that Lil Nas X, who was born Montero Lamar Hill, was intentionally being over the top because he is often criticised for being an openly gay man.

“So now, he’s like, ‘Oh, you say I’m too much, I’ll show you too much.’”

Lil Nas X also clapped back at the negative comments. One Twitter user said Lil Nas X’s “ugly ass” was doing too much.

“You really on here calling a young mother to be ugly?” he replied. “N****s be like ‘you desperate for attention' then proceed to give it to me.”

He eventually decided to just ignore the hate.

“Let me get offline, all this negative energy is not good for the baby.”
