Ed Sheeran: 'People think it’s weird getting a therapist'
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Ed opens up about his struggles with drugs, revealing that he sought therapy after losing two of his close friends.
Ed Sheeran has revealed that he didn't want to live after losing his friends, Jamal Edwards and Shane Warne, and turned to therapy to overcome his depression.
"I’ve always had real lows in my life. But it wasn’t really till last year that I actually addressed it," the 'Shape of You' hitmaker told Rolling Stone magazine.
His best friend Jamal - who he had known for years- suffered a heart attack in 2022 which was brought on by him taking cocaine and drinking alcohol, according to several reports.
“I felt like I didn’t want to live anymore. And I have had that throughout my life.… You’re under the waves drowning. You’re just sort of in this thing. And you can’t get out of it," he told the publication.
His wife, Cherry Seaborn, suggested that he sees a therapist - which he did for the first time in his life.
“No one really talks about their feelings where I come from. People think it’s weird getting a therapist in England.… I think it’s very helpful to be able to speak with someone and just vent and not feel guilty about venting. Obviously, like, I’ve lived a very privileged life. So my friends would always look at me like, ‘Oh, it’s not that bad.’ ”

Ed revealed that his best friend's death convinced him to stop taking drugs. The 32-year-old admitted he "was always a drinker" but started dabbling in drugs when he was 24.
He stopped drinking hard liquor before the birth of his daughter Lyra and has vowed never to touch drugs again.
"I would never, ever, ever touch anything again, because that's how Jamal died. And that's just disrespectful to his memory to even, like, go near."
Ed and Cherry welcomed their second daughter last year. He revealed that they named her Jupiter.

The British singer also talks about Jamal, his family, career, and other personal stories in his new Disney + docuseries, 'Ed Sheeran: The Sum Of It All'.
He reveals in the documentary that his wife Cherry suffered a health scare in 2022.
"Everything in my life got so much better when Cherry got into it. I got married, and I'm a dad who has two daughters," the 32-year-old said in the trailer.
Cherry was diagnosed with a tumour when she was pregnant with their second daughter and had to undergo surgery. This, coupled with the death of Jamal, took a toll on his mental health.
"Cherry's health, it was really bad. And then suddenly my best friend Jamal dies." Ed's docuseries will debut on May 3 - two days before his new album, 'Subtract', drops on May 5.
The album is part of Ed's maths series, which also includes his diamond-selling hit, '÷ (Divide)'.
